Study Buddy: Budget Computer

Description

Study Buddy was created to address this issue. It is a low-cost, Raspberry Pi–powered learning device that operates entirely offline, providing access to digital lessons and educational content anytime, anywhere. The platform continuously updates itself using feedback from learners, creating a self-sustaining loop that improves both the quality and accessibility of education.

Unlike online platforms such as Khan Academy or mobile learning apps, which require internet access, Study Buddy brings a “school in your pocket” to communities where connectivity is limited. It empowers students to take control of their learning, while giving teachers and volunteers a flexible tool to support education in challenging environments.

Early adopters include teachers, technology volunteers, and students eager for affordable and adaptable digital learning. Deployment is facilitated through school programs, community outreach, and partnerships with NGOs such as CONRAD. Each device costs around $150, including the Raspberry Pi board, touchscreen, buttons, speaker, and assembly. Revenues from NGOs, commercial customers, and small contributions from direct beneficiaries support ongoing maintenance, content updates, and volunteer training, ensuring the platform remains sustainable and scalable.

Study Buddy is more than a device; it is a tool for empowerment. By bringing digital learning to students in underserved communities, it fosters equity, curiosity, and lifelong learning, helping children overcome barriers and unlock the potential that exists in every classroom and home.
